Chapter 10: Rivalry Kisses
Nico
Since the start of the National Hockey League, the Chicago Fury and the Toronto Blades have despised each other. The air in the arena smells different on rivalry night. The vibe is charged, constant static electricity as soon as I walked into the arena.
We'd faced each other 907 times over our franchise history. That's enough for 11 full 82 game seasons and some change. We are in the same division, and we are both usually in the playoffs, so it isn't a surprise we keep running into each other.
But this rivalry was personal for me. Before I was selected as the first-round draft pick for Fury, the league created an artificial rival between myself and Tyler Randolph. Tyler was a right-wing from Nova Scotia, and many sports analysts said he would be selected over me in the draft. We were the same age and played the same position.
I thought we were just doing it for the cameras to create hype for our draft, but it slowly morphed into a genuine hatred. Tyler was a dirt bag. Money and women, that's what he wanted going into the NHL, didn't matter what team he played for.
So when I went to the Fury and Tyler was selected second overall to the Blades, our rivalry officially began on the ice. Every time we played each other, the media hummed, tickets sold out, it was one of the most anticipated rivalries in the league.
In Tyler fashion, the entire first period, his chirping was consistent. The usual stupid shit that he lets come out of the hole in his face. Nothing I could handle, though.
The moments I had fought Tyler weren't when he provoked me, it was when he fucked with my team. If all he was going to do was run his mouth at me, I'd shut him up by winning. That's how I played hockey.
The crowd was booming going into the second period. The screaming and cheers vibrated the glass surrounding us. I could almost feel it through the ice. I was facing my team bench, watching Emerson inhale smelling salts like it was cocaine.
"Woo! Letâs fucking go boys, let's go!" he chants, shaking his head as he inhales again. He puts the salt down, slamming his hands on the bench as he stands up and climbing over the barrier to join me on the ice as we wait for the puck drop.
I shake my head, skating down towards Kai, who taps the goal twice with his stick, something he does every game. When we come back for the third period, he will hit it three times. Every time.
I tap him on the helmet and he turns, jerking his head at Tyler, "You handling that der'mo?"
I look over at him leaning on his player bench, his spotty beard and greasy-ass hair. He looks over at me, winking, and I give him a smile. The guy is the definition of a shit-stirrer.
"I got it under control. You just worry about not letting any pucks through those legs of yours," I say, slapping his back.
